Mia A car-free island with only 6 inhabitants is considered the best in the world according to a recent ranking.
The island of Flatey, located on the northwest coast of Iceland, has taken an impressive place in the list of one of the most popular agencies “Big 7”, which has made a ranking of the 50 best islands for 2020.
The result was decided based on a combination of readers’ votes, media reporting and the experience experienced by the staff themselves during the trip.
Although ‘Flatey’ is quiet in winter, the number of visitors experiences a gradual increase of 9 thousand visitors in summer, as people stay in holiday homes with wonderful natural scenery.
Island can only be reached by a ferry, which departs from the town of Stykkishólmur and while you are there you face the only hotel located on the island.
The island is known for its amazing beauty and bookstore, built in 1864, which is the oldest in Iceland.
There is also a church, dating from 1926, with frescoes painted by Kristjana and Baltasar Samper.
The “Big 7” agency, one of the most appreciated for the places it suggests, says about Flatey Island with these words: “In an attractive way, you feel like you are on the set of a movie.”
