The rediscovered marble sculpture by Antonio Canova of Mary Magdalene is expected to sell for $ 10 million and this is assumed to happen in the auction during July.
Described by Christie’s auction house as the “lost masterpiece” of the neoclassical Italian sculptor Maddalena Giacente, it was commissioned by the Earl of Liverpool, then British Prime Minister, and took three years to carve.
Describing Mary Magdalene in a state of religious ecstasy, the sculpture was completed shortly before Canova’s death in 1822.
